Manisa, historically known as Magnesia, is a city in Turkey's Aegean Region lying approximately 40 km northeast of the major city of İzmir.
Antique Turkish carpets unique to the Kula district of Manisa are famous throughout Turkey with their sophisticated designs and exceptional colour palettes.
In contrast the yoruk or nomads of the area wove a thicker simpler and distinctive rug in small formats which they used as part of their daily lives. The significance of the motifs originates in the nomadic lifestyle of these early tribal weaving groups.
