The Turkish town of Aydın is in the south-west of Anatolia. It's location near the Mediterranean ensured its importance in the past as a centre for trade and today is an agricultural area where the ancient tradition of weaving has now ceased. As in many western Anatolia regions, a number of Kilim designs were woven, from prayer mihrab kilims, as well as large kilims which are made in two halves. Some of the latter, feature a small squarish emblem which is repeated down the field in vertical lines; Aydın kilims are made in a slitweave construction and have a beautifully balanced colour palette; some feature a red ground, and the other colours used are cochineals, indigo blues, apricot , greens and brown. Good examples of these Aydin kilims are now highly prized and very collectable as they are no longer woven by the women of the area.
