The town of Senna is located in north-east Iran and is the source of some of the best known kurdish kilims. Senna kilims differ greatly from tribal, nomadic kilims woven by Kurdish people in other parts of Turkey and Iran. Their flatweave technique is of high standard and visually has more in common with the knotted workshop carpets of Persia. Commonly there is an endless repeat of floral pattern or 'Botehs ' or beehives, or occasionally there is a single central medallion which is then surrounded by these floral, boteh or beehive motifs.
The kilims tend to be small in size and use a slitweave, but unlike most other Kurdish kilims, they use extra weft inserts and curved wefts. This enables the designs to 'flow' without the stepped edges and geometrical forms typically found. Colours on the whole are soft blue, reddish pink and white, sometimes with the use of metal thread. Cotton is generaly used for the warps rather than wool and the wefts are often fine wool or occasionally metal or silk. Senna has the reputation for some of the finest kilims produced in Iran.
